The snowflake mystery

I just spent my first christmas in the tropics and there is something I don't understand: why are you guys crazy about putting snowflakes in your christmas decorations everywhere?? It's 36°C outside when it's christmas time so why linking christmas and cold/snowflakes/snowman like in Europe?
